Fouling, dirt and alternatives"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you have a paddlewheel log, this will sound familiar: you head out sailing and the speed reads zero, jumps around or gets stuck. It's not bad luck: when the speed log fails, it's almost always for the same reasons, and it happens to almost all of them.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sailoq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/04\/IMG_20171113_122127ss-300x169-1.jpg\" alt=\"Rueda cubierta de caracolillo: as\u00ed falla la corredera del barco\" class=\"wp-image-155\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why the speed log fails<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Fouling and marine growth.<\/strong> The paddlewheel is permanently in contact with the water and, within a few weeks, it fills up with algae, barnacles and small organisms that slow it down or jam it. This is known as <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bioincrustaci%C3%B3n\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">biofouling<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Dirt.<\/strong> Floating debris, fibres or bags can jam it while you're under way.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Wear.<\/strong> It's a mechanical part that never stops turning: shafts and bearings wear out over time.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Antifouling doesn't last long.<\/strong> Even if you clean and paint it when the boat is hauled out, it soon gets dirty again.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Signs that your speed log is failing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The speed reads zero even though the boat is moving.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It reads lower than the GPS on a day with no current.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It jumps around or is slow to react when you speed up or slow down.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It works when you leave port and stops working after a while.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you recognise any of these, check the paddlewheel before suspecting an electronic fault.
